The Writing section always comes last on the TOEFL iBT. This section consists of one independent and one integrated writing task. You will use a basic word processing program to input your response into the computer.

  • For the independent Writing task, you will be given a specific topic on which to write an essay based on your personal experience and viewpoints. To do well on this task, you must be able to write in a clear, well-organized style and support your viewpoint with relevant examples and reasons.
  • The integrated Writing task requires you to read a medium-length passage (around 250-300 words), listen to a short (1-2 minute) lecture on the same academic topic, and then write an essay about how the information from the two passages is related. As on the Speaking section, you will only get to listen to the academic lecture once before entering your response. Although the reading and listening passages are both on the same academic topic, they will differ in their treatment of the subject. In order to succeed on the integrated Writing task, you should take careful notes while you read and listen to the passages, as you will need this information when writing your essay.
